Micah's Birds

As many of you know, our son, Micah has his own little flock of birds that he enjoys. He is VERY opinionated when it comes to poultry, and has some very interesting ideas of what appeals to him as "pretty" or "cool". He has the Magpie Call ducks that are pictured somewhere already on the blog, in addition to those, he also has a Showgirl breeding pen set up currently with a white Silkie cock in with a splash Silkie hen and a white Showgirl hen. He has a breeding quad of Birchen Modern Games, in LARGEFOWL. As well as a Birchen Modern Game bantam cockerel and a white Silkie cockerel/pullet (we still haven't figured out what sex the little Silkie is, but it is still really young.) I will try to get nice pictures of the Moderns for you all to enjoy...

"In Pencil" 2012 Breeding Plans

These are all still "in pencil" as we haven't actually divided the pens or switched anyone around yet, but this is the plan so far.

Welsh Harlequins:
4 males, 8 females (3 trios of silvers, 1 trio of golds)
All bred together for the first portion of the year, and then around May, we may seperate the gold drake with our best silver hens to hatch gold breeder females from.

Indian Runners:
2 males, 4 females (2 trios)
All bred together for the breeding season, in hopes to increase the flock and give us a few more birds to go through and cull down to a decent flock.

Mallards:
5 males, 10 females
J.P. Drake x KS old hens, KS old drake x JP old hens, KS young drake x ks young hens, the wild greys will stay together as a pair, the J.P. gray drake will go in with one of the snowy hens we hatched last Spring from another line that is pied in hopes of producing all grey pieds. (Just for fun!)

East Indie:

Pekins:
Still not sure on this project.

Calls:
Pair together.

Nankins:
Still don't know, probably won't decide until they begin laying anyway.

Ducklings and Chickens

A white Call, three gray Calls & a Welsh Harlequin ducklings from several years ago.

Two pictures of the game-ish project cock I currently have. I love the color, but he's wild!!! Same one in the chicken crossing the road blog, but I finally caught him to dub him.

A cream light brown Dutch hen. We use to raise these wonderful little birds several years ago, and I love the breed, they are fragile birds, but excellent for children and great for 4H. (This photo is from the 2006 Crossroads National Show in Indianapolis. Hard the believe it was that long ago, but after the last one in October, it seems like just yesterday.

Because he is wild! He escaped a couple weeks ago from a pen he was in, and I haven't been able to catch him since. Here he is near our house in the median of a four lane highway...Crazy bird! He is a crossbred cock-bird, but I really liked his pattern. Sort of a largefowl-Nankin looking bird.

I love this guys comb! There is a full body shot of him further down, but in a breed where there is often little attention paid to a quality comb, this bird has a pretty nice one. Its small, has nice DISTINCT points and an actual blade in the rear. (No spike like you often see from the rose-crosses.)

This is the hen that "started it all". She came from Mary Ann Harley's stock at the '06 Crossroads National, and I actually got her from a local breeder where a lot of my stock originally came from, and some still does, but she is the first Nankin hen I ever purchased, along with a rose combed cock bird that is still alive, but he lives at a 4Her's house not far from us.

Cock #27- rose combed, mostly red earlobe

Cockerel #91- single combed, completely red earlobe

Cockerel #43- single combed, mostly white earlobe.
I love his tail and sickles, but the lobe bothers me. Luckily the other single comb cockerel will probably end up as the single comb breeder for 2012, and this one will be a back-up "just-in-case" male bird.

Grown Out and Culled Out

With the Crossroads National and Fall-weather quickly approaching we have been spending a lot of time looking at the birds, handling them, moving them around, and even evaluating them up on the show cages. We have culled this year's babies down to what we are satisfied with holding on to, and what we want to show as young birds at Nationals. We hatched: 9 Trout Indian Runners, 14 Welsh Harlequins, 18 Snowy Mallards, and a bunch of chickens. We have decided to hold on to the following. 4 Indian Runners (which will be just a trio after Nationals.) a trio of Welsh Harlequins, 1 snowy Mallard drake, 2 Snowy Mallard hens, the pied Snowy hen from earlier posts, and our 6 bantam Welsummers as well as the largefowl Welsummer cockerel.
In the Nankin bantams, we are keeping the one rosecomb pullet we hatched this year and purchased five single comb cockerels and a single comb pullet. I saved out the single comb pullet and an older single comb cockerel and have already sold the rest of the older bunch, and then held another single comb cockerel that was about the same age as our rose comb pullet, so now we have on "old" breeding quad consisting of a RC cock, 2 RC hens and a SC hen. An young "older" pair of single comb birds and then a younger pair of 1 SC cockerel and our RC pullet. Can you follow that? 3 male birds and 5 female birds total in that breed.
The Welsummers turned out to be five pullets and 1 cockerel as well as one largefowl cockerel!!! So that was pretty cool! So now we have to wait as the rest grow out, fill out, and feather out to see what our birds will look like for the Crossroads show.
We do still have a few odds and ends for sale if anyone is interested! And we are starting to get 1-2 eggs a day again, so we should have eggs available for the people that have contacted me about Fall hatching eggs.

AKC Standard Poodle Stud Service

We are pleased to announce that we will be offering stud service from our beautiful Chocolate Standard Poodle Keeney's Lord Cadbury. We will be offering AKC registration for Poodle to Poodle and if you are interested in other crosses, we are willing to discuss it. Poodle to Lab, Golden Retriever etc... I will post pictures soon. We are planning to begin offering him near the end of this year the beginning of 2012, so e-mail us for more information.

2011 Hatching Season

The ducklings and chicks that have hatched so far this year. There are Snowy Mallards, Trout Indian Runners and Welsh Harlequins in one brooder (they are outgrowing it very quickly!)
Then in the chick brooder there are bantam Welsummers, a largefowl Welsummer, a Copper Marans and a Nankin!

So far, we've had a very good hatch of Snowy Mallards, which almost makes up for the last two or so year that we haven't hatched any of them. This is really our first year hatching much of anything since having kids, so its nice to get back into the swing of things. We should have several nice birds to exhibit at the Fall shows and the Crossroads National in Indy in Oct. as well as some very nice "nice-but-not-quite" to sell at the National. 2011 Breeding Season

Well our breeding season is well under way. We have all of our different breeds divided into breeding pens, and we are getting eggs and being patient until we get enough of them to make it worth plugging in the big 1202 incubator. (We are considering buying a small cheap incubator, if the ducks don't pickup...it seems a shame to waste the eggs.)

In other news, all of our Golden Retriever puppies were sold and went on to their new homes. We've heard very good things about them since they left here. We've made plans and an agreement with another breeder to purchase a new dog to add to our family. It will be an Easter present for our children. Stay tuned...We will post pictures as soon as we get it. I will say it is male and SO ADORABLE!

Puppies were welped 12/15/2010, and will be ready the week of Valentine's Day. We have 4 females and 1 male, and the male is already spoken for!

A couple of people have e-mailed to ask about prices for birds and I decided it would be easier to post them rather than have to retype them each and every time. So here you go. Please keep in mind that we are NOT a hatchery. We breed for breed standards and breed qualities that we think are important parts of each breed. (We will not sell day-old ducklings.)

(includes shipping) we don't have pictures of these, but we have a very nice strain of these birds, they are older birds, so we don't normally sell many of their eggs, but if you are interested, we do have them. Our two year old shows them from time to time. He won BB and RB Saxony at the last show we went to. Very beautiful birds!

Started & Adult Birds all breeds prices range, but are normally between $10.00-$60.00 for pairs. Once in a while we have individuals for sale and they are $10.00-$25.00 each.

New Snowy Mallards from OH.

Well we can't yet say that we are ready for 2011 to start, but we are slowly getting our breeding pens in order and ready for a new breeding season. Here are our plans (written in pencil for the time being.)

Welsh Harlequins: 3 Drakes 9 Ducks (both silver phase and gold phase all in one pen.)

Indian Runners: 1 Drake 2 Ducks (all trout)

Snowy Mallard: 4 Drakes 4 Ducks (four breeding pens)

Nankins: 2 Cocks 4 Hens (two breeding pens of rose and single combs)

Ameraucana: 1 Cock 4 Hens (one breeding pen all blacks)

Call Ducks: not really sure what we are doing with these, maybe not hatching anything from them, still don't know.

I am pretty sure the New Hampshires, color project, and maybe a couple other birds here and there are for sale...e-mail if interested.

Chocolate Project Cockerel: Turning out to be quite a beautiful bird but unless I find something to use him with, this is pretty much the end of the project.

Nankins out in the daypens. They don't stay in these without us being home, but they give the chickens some much need access to green our well...brown grass and dirt and bugs, without any worry of the males fighting or anything getting them.

Blue Magpie Drake and Black Magpie Duck

Our two year old son had a pair of black Modern Game bantams that disappeared, (not sure if it was a wandering dog or 'coon.) Anyway, he loves birds so we wanted to replace them before he noticed and through a huge fit about it. Anyway...I still don't think he's noticed the bantams are missing, but he is in love with these two little Call ducks. Hopefully we can hatch some next Spring. They are such cute ducklings!!! These are far from top show quality, but nice ducks for a two year old.

Upcoming Show: Oct. 16th - Central Indiana Poultry Breeders Assoc. (Lebanon, IN) We sent off our show entry form for the CIPBA show, and wouldn't you guess most of the birds are molting and looking less than the best. We are taking mostly waterfowl with the exception of the Ameraucana male and so sale birds. We are also taking some rabbits for sale. There are six Dutch rabbits out there that we need to sell. We didn't need them to begin with but we are helping out a friend of ours that developed an allergy to rabbits after a bout with pnemonia. They are nice rabbits but she is allergic to them, so we are disposing of them for her. In the meantime, I did take some more pictures of our Snowy Mallards.

We have several really nice looking babies growing out in what were breeding pens. Most of the adult birds have been moved to "community" pens and now we are waiting, culling and anticitpating the show season. Our first show of the Fall season will be the White River Poultry Association show in Spencer, IN. We won't have anything for sale, but if you are interested, I may have a couple of Welsh Harlequin drake-lings to spare, and I have my chocolate cross project hen for sale. (She didn't turn out as I had expected so she doesn't need to stay around, she's carrying chocolate, but I won't be able to use her.) Also looking for a few misc. birds...but most of them I think are found, just need to get them here. Fall is just around the corner! Can't wait for some cooler weather!

Chocolate breeding project

These are the product of a chocolate Old English Game hen and a Rose combed Nankin Rooster

(Note: the pullet has a rose comb and the cockerel has a single, which means the rooster is split for both in comb genetics otherwise they would have both been rose combs.)

This was a breeding project to see how chocolate reacts within these patterns. My ultimate goal is to create something similar in pattern to a Nankin, but where they have black in the tails, I want these to have chocolate. They are very cool looking!

Unfortunatly we don't have any babies to show off yet. We are working on it though, we have handful of Snowy Mallard and Nankin eggs in an incubator. We have a borrowed-broody bantam hen, that we have half a dozen Nankin eggs under and are collecting Welsh Harlequin, Saxony, Snowy Mallard and of course Nankin eggs to set as soon as we turn on the large GQF incubator. We also order 20 Welsh Harlequin ducklings from Holderreads' Preservation Farm. Hopefully we will be able to "more quickly" rebuild our duck flock after the fox attacks last season.

Happy Hatching Everyone!!! Hopefully some nice young birds will soon be filling our brooders, but until then...we are continuing to collect eggs to hatch. We will not have any hatching eggs available this year. We may have young adult birds around the end of August or middle of September.

Summer molt, and young birds after 2005 breeding season. (Bird in doghouse door is a female from Ideal Hatchery, never used in breeding pen, but purchased to add new blood...never did.)

Snowy duckling (hen) and grey duckling (drake) hatched from 07 breeding season. Crossed Fridge w/L. Allen grey hen, with the intention of getting darker snowy, but only hatched drakes...so didn't have birds to cross back. Used trout drake this season too, and hatched 2 pure white drakes.
